  3. Finally, the new blog is up and running. Yahoo discontinued servicing their blogs because it wasn't cost effective for them to upgrade their software. As a result they have helped us set up this new blog. Again, this is free to the community. I'm sorry to say that all the comments from the previous blog are lost.

Feel free to leave any comments, questions, concerns you have about the community and our area.

  4. Now that the blog is up and running will we be able to upload photos and links. I know blogspot has these capabilities. It also has archiving abilities also.

The comment as: section is very confusing

  5. I know the "comment as" dropbox is confusing but I don't know of any other way to set it up without everyone having to register to leave a comment. I thought if everyone has to register, it might discourage someone from commenting. If anyone knows a simplier way to set this up let me know.

  6. I understand Tom, I will study it and if I find a better way, I will let you know. It's good we have the blog going again. That is the most important thing.

  7. I just wanted to post and let all know our councilman, Warren Turner, just voted yes for the trolley to eastland.
Honestly, I have been on the bandwagon for the one we were promised. This last year has changed the landscape though. It is not a justifiable expense at this point in my(and many others)opinion. Yours may differ but either way, Mr Turner could not be reached to share any of them. As usual, his phone goes unanswered and voice mail is full. Past experience tells me he doesn't respond to emails either. This kind of public service is what Mr. Turner thinks justifies the 20% pay increase he supported and voted in favor of for himself and the other councilmen.

Also, out of curiousity, has anyone else received calls from the reverse 911 system about non emergency events? I got one today about a free seminar at Freedom Library. It irks me this emergency tool is being used to telemarket to citizens. That was not its intent. I have called to find out why this is going on. I would encourage others to call as well.

  9. The DAR Monument at Campe Greene 1926 dedication, is in need of sprucing up. Our Chapter, Mecklenburg has contacted for repairs of the flag pole and the metal gate of the surrounding fence, however the grounds around the monument need weeding, perhaps laying down ground cover topped with crushed rock to keep it looking good. I have contacted the Boy Scouts about making this a project. Is there any organization within the neighborhood willing to help out on this project ?

  10. There are several folks who would probably volunteer to help. I'd suggest setting a date and posting that along with some contact info.

  11. I think Warren Turner get a NO vote at the next elections. I can't see where he has done any good for our community.

  12. I'm not certain if we have a new gang in the neighborhood or what but lots of graffiti has gone up lately with "bottom" or "bottom boys". I noticed 1801 Camp greene was tagged today as well as two signs @ Spaugh Academy. I reported both to CMPD. You can call 311 for non emergency police to report graffiti. If you see someone putting up graffiti though dial 911.

  13. I attended the Tree Banding Grant meeting on Tuesday night and even though we don't have a meeting scheduled for October I need to get together with some people to create a "Tree Banding Committee", create flyers, flyer the communities, identify the trees to be banned and complete the application.

  14. LaWana, you will need to set a time and place if you want to get a committee together.

  15. We will be having a meeting this month. It will be next Tuesday, Oct 20th. This meeting was added so that the Principal at Spaugh Middle could speak to the group. She wasn't able to make it before. Also the students from UNCC will be back for more details of the community study UNCC is doing for us. We can discuss the tree banding initiative at the next meeting or you can schedule a meeting that's more convenient for you.

  17. More on SeeClickFix:
Empowering citizens to improve their communities, SeeClickFix functions as a hub for residents to report and track non-emergency issues, with the aim of having them resolved by local government and neighbourhood groups.

The Connecticut-based venture was inspired in part by UK enterprise FixMyStreet, which we covered in 2007, when it was known as Neighbourhood Fix-It. SeeClickFix expands the model on several fronts. The free problem reporting service benefits from enhanced mobile accessibility in the form of an iPhone app, Twitter and a US toll-free number, helping people to report concerns while on the go. SeeClickFix will match reported problems with potential 'fixers'—users or groups who have signed up to receive updates—according to their location or keyword relevancy. Interested local media and bloggers are also encouraged to syndicate these feeds (which are available in a variety of formats), and to stimulate community engagement by adding Google Maps-based widgets to their own websites. And adding an extra level of interactivity, users can show their support for causes by voting, commenting and sharing.

SeeClickFix is currently focusing on select US cities, but was created with global expansion in mind. Its founders hope to maintain the sustainability of their enterprise by way of a paid premium service for local authorities, which offers extra tools for tracking issues and viewing data. SeeClickFix is also enlisting volunteers—SideClicks—to act as ambassadors for the service in their local area.

  18. There is a thief in our midst. The plant thief is at it again, Please be on the look out and call the police if you see anyone digging up plant or carring potted plant down the street. The plants from the community sign at Remount and Greenland were stollen this week and potted plants have been stollen off peoples porches.

  19. Check the yard of the yellow house @ camp greene and marlowe. That is where the stolen plants all wound up the last time (several months ago). I was told an email was going to go out notifying people to check this yard for their plants but if it did, I never saw it.

BTW - another shooting at VOX this weekend.

  20. Checked there and the white house with the black iron shutters across the street. Didn't see them.

  23. CMPD PREPARED FOR BUSY HOLIDAY SEASON

Wednesday, November 25, 2009 – Charlotte, NC – With the onset of the winter holidays, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is stepping up patrols and taking special precautions to ensure the safety of citizens and shoppers throughout the holiday season. Beginning this week, with one of the biggest shopping days of the year, police presence will increase and continue through New Years.

Funded through the Justice Assistance Grant (JAG), extra patrols have been added throughout the entire jurisdiction, providing heightened visibility, especially in high volume shopping areas. This includes all major shopping centers, malls, and superstores such as Walmart, Target, and Sams Club. The Department has allotted more than $80,000 of JAG overtime funding to support this project.

The Department will be paying special attention to its known and repeat offenders while also employing the full support of its undercover officers who will be on the lookout for any criminal activity and suspicious behavior. Officers will have a special focus on crimes such as shoplifting and larceny from autos. The Department also plans to fully utilize crime prevention tools such as its Sky Watch Towers.

In addition to more police patrols, CMPD will collaborate with private security firms to combine efforts.

Emphasizing the crucial relationship between the community and law enforcement, CMPD will be working with local businesses to reinforce precautionary measures for money management and business safety. The Department is also encouraging citizens to take preventive steps to ensure the securing of their property and their personal safety and offers these tips for the holiday season:

    Safety While Shopping

Pay with checks or credit cards when possible. Don’t flash large amounts of cash.

Don’t leave any purchases or your purse unattended while shopping or in a dressing room.

Try to carry as little as possible. Make multiple trips to your vehicle to store your purchases.

    Never leave your children alone.

If your children get separated from you, teach them to find a cashier or a security officer and ask for help.

Report all suspicious activity. Call 911 with a description.

  24. Continuation from above

    Safety in the Parking Lots

Park and walk in well-lit areas.

Walk with confidence be aware of people around you, and know where you parked.

Always lock your car doors after leaving or entering your car.

Have your keys in your hand so that you don’t have to linger before entering your car. Check the back seat before you get in.

Don’t leave packages on the car seats. Keep packages out of sight in the trunk or under a covered rear cargo area.

    Home Holiday Safety

Make sure your home is well lit. Turn on outside lights, spotlights, motions lights, etc. Leave several lights on timers while you are away to give your home that lived in look.

Keep all shrubbery trimmed. Do not allow shrubbery to conceal windows or doors.

Remove anything a burglar could climb up on to gain entry or use to knock out a window or door; items such as ladders, tools, tables, and chairs.

All exterior doors should be solid, rather than hollow core.

Don’t leave garage roll down doors open, even while you are home or while you are doing yard work.

Use a deadbolt lock to secure your doors. A good deadbolt should have a 1” throw, if you have glass within 40” of the lock a burglar could reach in and unlock the door. A double cylinder lock (this type needs a key on both sides to unlock) should be used if glass is near the lock.

If you are going away contact a trusted neighbor or friend to pick up your mail, newspaper and other delivered items.

Try not to leave gifts in open view. This is an invitation to burglars.

Don’t advertise new gifts or purchases. Break up cartons before leaving them at the curb or dispose of them another way the morning of trash pick up.

Don’t forget to engrave new gifts or purchases with your Drivers license number.

Don’t open your door to strangers. Be wary of solicitors and salespersons. If a stranger asks to use your telephone, tell them to stay outside, lock the door behind you and make the call for them. Never let a stranger inside your home.

Don’t give any information about yourself or your neighbor to a stranger.
